“Getting to the Core of It: Developing and Modifying AAC Devices and Displays for Generative Language and Communication”
9:00 am – 4:00 pm Boxwood/Dogwood
Presenter:
Chip Clarke, Assistive Technology Works, Inc.
Core vocabulary provides a means by which AAC users of all ages and abilities can achieve language
based goals and generative communication. Core vocabulary can be modified through a variety of
methods and techniques to best match the individual’s abilities.
This presentation will look at a combination of language assessment techniques and developmental
models that can be used to determine and select the most appropriate core vocabulary, fringe vocabulary, and representation system for an individual. Strategies will be given to modify and expand the system as language skills evolve. A laptop lab will be utilized to allow participants to modify their own displays for high tech devices. Case studies and videos will be utilized to provide examples of individuals using modified displays.
Participants will need to bring their own laptops and are encouraged to bring high-tech communication devices.
Learning Outcomes
- Participants will understand the use of developmental models in conjunction with AAC vocabulary
selection.
- Participants will understand differences in core and fringe vocabulary and their interrelations to
actual programming structures.
- Participants will understand the relationship of iconicity to language representation models for specific vocabulary.
- Participants will demonstrate the ability to modify display of communication device via product
emulators to reflect client’s appropriate language level.
