Brian Frasure
Brian Frasure is a competitor whose love of running led him to a career filled with purpose for himself and others. He brings a wealth of knowledge and first-hand experience with assistive technology and athletic prowess to the AT Expo as the keynote speaker.
During his senior year at Maiden High School in North Carolina, he qualified for the state championships in the 300m hurdles, despite not having a track or hurdles to practice. Brian continued track in college at NC State where early in his sophomore year he was involved in an accident with a train that resulted in the loss of his left leg below the knee. But his love for running didn’t stop. Brian competed in the Paralympics medaling in every Paralympics since the 2000 Games in Sydney, Australia. He is the National and World Champion in the 100 and 200 meter events and is the current WR holder in the 4x100 m and 4x400 m relays.
Brian graduated from NC State with a BS in Industrial Engineering in 1996. Inspired by his experience as a Paralympics sprinter, Brian completed a Prosthetics Certification Program at Northwestern University in 1998 and began a career in prosthetics.
An accomplished Certified Prosthetist with over eleven years of experience in the Orthotics and Prosthetics Industry, Brian’s work in the development of the Cheetah feet helped his rival Oscar Pistorius win the Gold medal while Frasure won the Bronze in the 100 m at the Beijing Paralympics. About that particular race, Brian is quoted in 2008 ABC news story as saying, “Of course, it is bittersweet, as an athlete I hate to lose, but as a friend and prosthetist of his, it makes me feel good inside that I’ve been able to help him achieve his goals.”
With his home base in Apex, Brian is the National Programs Clinical Manager with Ossur North America in Aliso Viejo, CA. Brian consults with and assists Certified Prosthetists across the country in the fitting of military personnel with prosthetic limbs and leads Regional Bionic Workshops for the Veterans Administration. The goal of the workshop is not only to teach an individual to walk with the prosthesis but to integrate body, mind and machine. Brian also leads Sport and Fitness clinics for military personnel.
Brian is the recipient of the 2009 Challenged Athletes Foundation Sempra Energy Trailblazer Award. The award citation says it best, “ Brian Frasure is an elite track and field athlete who demonstrates courage, commitment and leadership both on the track and in helping new amputees and military servicemen and women learn to maximize their mobility.”
